Snakebit

This post comes from bits and pieces of rummage that I intended to organize but never did. It is a collection of comments to a Peggy Noonan article from several years ago that I neglected to note the title of. It is one of the first where Peggy took her blinders off and realized that maybe the Obama Administration was not such a refreshing change. As usual with Peggy for the last few years, her commenters are a bit more astute than she is:

Comment 1

Many of us, including naive Peggy, confuse incompetence with very competently doing something beyond the pale of normal presidential behavior. We all think, "He appears to be screwing up such and so. He must be incompetent!" When actually, every one of these "crises" (and they seem to appear with frightening regularity wouldn't you agree) serves as an excuse for him to bring to bear another aspect of his totalitarian instincts.

Likewise, the comparison with Jimmy Carter is way off. Jimmy Carter was merely a fool in over his head. Obama is no fool, and he--no matter what we may want to think--is not in over his head. He and the leftists surrounding him are very much well informed, and have a plan for everything that seems to accidentally happen. It just happens not to be what we would expect of a president, even a liberal one.

Don't fool yourselves as Peggy repeatedly does. Obama laughs at our conventional definitions of right and wrong, competence and incompetence, popularity and unpopularity. None of this matters to him. He has his eye on a much bigger prize--the fundamental transformation of this country into something we truly won't recognize. (As he has repeatedly iterated.) Once we are able to wrap our heads around this paradigm, maybe we will know the way forward.

Comment 2

Obama's done. DONE.
What puzzles me is why some think ANYONE with a job would vote for this clown again.
Driving in eastern downtown San Diego, within eyeshot of the shining residential towers of western downtown, one sees Obama's "base" shuffling around, hanging out, "chillin" on the street ... at 2 pm on a Wednesday! This base is precisely what Obama has in mind when he preaches redistribution: Handouts to the unmotivated jobless. Scoop them up in vans on polling day.
I think he's in for an epic fail. It doesn't take an economist, only a gainfully-employed or job-seeking American, to realize that the fundamental Obama meme -- "give health care, flat screens and pocket cash to the shiftless" -- requires TAKING it from the productive (who refuse, so it's TAKEN from future workers by borrowing). You can't just GIVE things to the unproductive, who don't produce themselves, without taking it from those that do.
Reagan had it right, and Gingrich forced Clinton to accept it: You have to make the able-bodied poor WORK, produce something for the pot, to get anything above subsistence living, or they simply won't work.

In 2010 Obama won't be on the ticket, won't be lying to the foolish, idealistic young and the greedy, cynical "poor" ... he's proven unable to motivate votes for anyone but hisself.

I expect at least one house to fall to Republicans in November. Get ready for the investigations and hearings to begin in earnest in January....

Done.

TARP, The Porkulus bill, screwing the Chrysler bondholders to pay off the unions, outsourcing healthcare to Nutty Nancy and the radical left in the House, and letting the oil slick hit the Gulf Coast shoreline undeflected, etc.. etc... all in just 18 months is not bad luck. Its bad leadership. Ms. Noonan is being far too kind to Mr Obama. He was lucky to be elected, he was deceitful as to his true aims, and the US and the world are unlucky to have him as President

The Dems ran on a Calculated Deception.
......... article..........
The American people never voted for such a radical left takeover of America.
Barack Obama ran on a net spending cut at the federal level, a tax cut for 95% of Americans, a promise of a new era of post-partisan political peace, and a pledge to sweet talk Iran out of "unacceptable" nuclear weapons.

Obama was greatly aided by the history of Bill Clinton, who after 1994 mostly just went along with the Gingrich Congressional majority Republicans, resulting in solidly conservative economic, defense and foreign policies. Many voters were consequently deluded into thinking Obama and the Democrats would just be a reprise of Bill Clinton and the 1990s.

But what should be brutally obvious by now is that Barack Obama is no Bill Clinton, and those analysts who think he may be on the same political trajectory as Clinton are badly deluded as well.

The Democrats took over the Congress using the "Blue Dog" Democrat trick. In district after district, Democrats ran claiming to be pro-life, Second Amendment, tax and deficit cutting, fiscal conservatives, more Reagan than the Republicans.

But all they have done is empowered the above radical left takeover of the Congressional leadership. And when their votes were necessary to pass the radical left agenda, such as with the socialized medicine bill, or the unjustifiable cap and tax House bill, just enough of them voted for it to pass, with the rest still trying to maintain their cover. Even enough of those supposedly "pro-life" Democrats in the end sold out on abortion in the health care bill to the ruling left-wing party leadership.

The Blue Dog Democrat scam was aided by the above-noted history of Democrat Congresses run by Southern conservative committee chairmen. Too many voters thought as a result that the Democrats could be trusted with majority congressional control again.

Winning power through such consistent, thorough deception, the Democrats have no mandate for their left-wing extremism, and are just further angering and rousing voters as a result. That is another huge dark cloud indicating the coming political tsunami." The American Spectator

The people who, like the posters on these forums, pay close attention to daily politics are a small minority. They are part of the 'swing' crowd that both parties court, but they are not the real makers or breakers of elections.

Parties start with their bases. First, cobble together a platform that will energize the crowds that either vote for their party or don't vote at all, so that they're motivated enough to get to the polls on election day. This is a LARGE chunk of the electorate, and it's crucial to any win.

Only after the base is secured and motivated do attentions turn to swing voters. Many of these are folks who may consider themselves more sophisticated as voters, but in fact are either flavor-of-the-month types or front runners. The former can be picked up with the right position on particular issues, and the latter come on board when a candidate starts capturing the national spotlight.

In short, most people don't pay close attention to politics during the course of their normal routines, yet they still vote. Fortunately for us, many normal routines have been disrupted or are being disrupted, and this is motivating people to take a harder look at what's going on. They are witnessing the failure of big government, and they're angry. Lets hope enough of them turn out on election day

Hardly,.she's not even close to getting it. Ms. Noonan correctly gets the feeling that Obama is not what he says, or projects, or we were told. But for her, it's an uneasy feeling that something isn't quite right. It's that "oh-oh" feeling when he blatantly lies and deceives. She wants so badly to giive him the benefit of the doubt that she can;t see Obama isn't "snakebit," he's the snake. This is all of Obama's making. The man is the one we have been waiting for -sheesh- with the gigantic ego and the purpose of purifying America. He is unqualified, incompetent, and dangerous.

His staff is obviously brilliant because they consistently have him taking the same tired line on every major issue. He, his party's leadership, and their supporters spent 8 years blaming George Bush for every ill in the world, all the while preaching the gospel that "smart" government could fix it. Well, this time around, he's had the legal authority to coordinate a massive government response to this problem from day one, but he was absolutely mortified to be out in front of the issue. He can whine and blame all he wants now, though. It will only demonstrate how absolutely terrified he is to lead. People are sick of the Blamer-in-Chief--they want someone with guts, and it's more obvious than ever that Obama has none

Remember when Obama ran for office . . . and Russia came into Georgia throwing it's muscle around . . . McCain condemned Russia's actions . . . Obama dithered and finally said, "I think both sides need to take a deep breath." That's our president. Take a deep breath and everything will work out just fine. I knew he wasn't right for the job when he ran for it. He has a pattern of not getting involved, keeping his distance, until a catastrophe takes place. And then he's forced into doing his job. All he cares about is getting re-elected and growing the Democratic party. In the meantime, he refuses to get his hands dirty. Did he think the presidency was nothing more than having a good time? Two and a half more years of this guy. What else will happen under his watch? Nothing has changed under him, except everything is getting worse.

Snakebit? Every president has problems that need fixing. Do we say Kennedy was snakebit by the Bay of Pigs? No, he made a mistake and learned. And, was Kennedy snakebit by the Cuban Missile crisis? No! He had learned the job of president. Requirements are more than pretty speeches.

Carter wasn't snakebit. He was incompetent. But, Obama is worse. Obama is a hate-mongering incompetent. What Peggy should have written about is the hate in America today, thanks entirely to Obama. I find it disgusting. I've had enough and want to wake up from this nightmare. But, I can't.

Frankly, never in my life have I seen so much hate. And, it's coming form the White House. If it's not cops in Cambridge, or Arizonians, its bankers, car manufacturers. And, now it's oil drillers. Every week there's a new villain. If Obama isn't playing a game of us against them, he's not breathing.

Every week, customers come in with the most hate filled message. The target, or villain changes as Obama's villains change. But the hate is the constant. All is coming from the White House with the exception of those hating Obama. Obama has brought out the absolute worst in human nature when he should be calling to our better angels. For this he will get a handful of dust instead of prosperity. But, I suspect that's okay with Obama, because it doesn't seem that the well being of the American people is anything that interests him.
